| A Phishing Scam is an email message sent by unknown persons that are looking for valid email addresses to sell to spammers.
The way they do this is to send you a message that looks too good to be true.
The message will ask you to go one of several things, any of which tells the 'Phishers' that your email address is valid.
- call a phone number, they will ask for your email address.
- click a link within the message (this promises something that is rarely delivered)
- open an attachment
- go to a certain website and enter your email address
- etc.
This situation can result in:
- You are now on an unwanted email list (Mild Problem)
- You just opened a virus (Bad Problem)
- You dropped your protection against identity theft (Terrible Problem)
Figure 1 is an example of a very suspicious email. either this is a phishing scam or carries a virus:

Very Important: Do Not follow any instructions in an email like these!!
I don't remember signing up for itunes or purchasing anything from them.
Recommendations:
- Turn on your phishing filter (Internet Explorer, see Figure 2)
- Don't go places you shouldn't go on the Internet.
- Be less trusting of your inbox. (You really aren't going to get a $4.3 Million settlement from Sri Lanka)
- Delete unknown messages without openning them.
- If things are really bad (lots in your inbox) you may wnat to
get rid of your current email address and start a new one. (this means
telling all your trusted contacts what the new one is...)
- etc. (Other recommendations accepted from you)

So, to sum up:
- Phishing is meant to get your money, your identity or your email address. Don't let them have any of these.
- Be more cautious.
- When in doubt, delete that message.
- If your email provider allows it, report spam and phishing scams
